1. Community Service Night–Call for donations and participation!
Please join us at 6:30pm on Thursday, February 8, 2024, as we come together for our annual Community Service Night. Parents and kids will pack boxes filled with fun gifts for children in local hospitals, organized through the Jared Box Project (https://thejaredbox.org/).

The Wayside PTA will provide shoebox-sized storage boxes, and we are calling on our generous Wayside community to help fill the boxes either by donating items or by helping with your kids on February 8th to pack the boxes or by helping in both ways!!

Please click here to see what is needed and sign up to bring in some much needed items from the list.

Examples of types of items needed can be found here.

Donations may be left in the box in the front office starting on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, or you may bring your donation with you to the event on Thursday, February 8th.
Thank you in advance for your participation and donations. Any questions, please feel free to email Rima (rima.adler@gmail.com) or Yishen (yishensun@yahoo.com).

For those of you who have not participated in the past, Community Service Night is a family event where each person will be tasked with packing boxes (provided) with fun toys and items (donated) that will help entertain hospitalized children. The organization services kids of all ages so boxes will be tailored by age/ gender to provide the recipient with a box made with them in mind.  With the help of our Wayside Community, we hope to show our children what can be accomplished when a community comes together to help those in need. Please consider donating items to pack prior to the event, and/or coming to help fill the boxes. The event generally lasts about an hour and this is a family event where you AND your kid(s) can work together! We look forward to packing with you.

4. Lunar New Year Lion Dance Assembly with Chua Martial Arts

On Friday, the PTA Sponsored a Lion Dance Assembly to honor the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday!  Students were excited to see the magnificent lion come to life after hearing the story of the Nian Monster.  Our Dolphins heard the banging of the drums while the lion made its way through the crowd passing out mandarins (for good luck) and red colored candies.  The guest speakers also taught us about the traditions and customs during the holiday, which many students were excited to connect with.  We learned that some Lunar New Year traditions include not washing your hair or sweeping the floors in fear of washing/sweeping away good luck.  We learned that sticky foods are eaten because they symbolize unity, strong bonds and family.  Dolphins heard about the symbolism of red, the meaning of 88 (prosperity) and the one that really struck a chord: China gets an entire month off from school to celebrate!  Thanks to Chua Martial Arts for welcoming such a wonderful holiday with the Wayside students.

5. Free Trees from Neighborhood Forest
It’s FREE tree time! Wayside Elementary School is once again partnering with Neighborhood Forest to provide free trees for kids to plant during Earth Week. Sign your child up for a free tree by March 15th! Trees will be sent home with your child around Earth Day 2024 so you can plant them at your house!
