1. Free Shipping on Wayside Spirit Wear through October 12!

Wayside spirit wear is now available online! As an introduction, free shipping is available from Friday, September 25 until Monday, October 12. Visit the online store at www.waysidespiritwear.com.

Students and parents can choose which Wayside logos they would like on a variety of different products. There even is a special “Wayside Zooming into 2020” design! Students can customize the color of their items easily.

2. Reflections

For more than 50 years, National PTA has celebrated the imagination and creativity of students through the Reflections program. Reflections is a unique arts-in-education effort as it engages all students, including two age groups for elementary schools: Primary for K through grade 2, and Intermediate for grade 3 through grade 5. The 2020-2021 theme is

I Matter Because…

There are six categories for this friendly competition, and participants can enter in more than one category.

1) Dance Choreography
2) Film Production
3) Literature
4) Music Composition
5) Photography
6) Visual Art

There is also a division for the Special Artists.

Please find the rules for the six categories, the rules for the Special Artist Division, and the entry form.

This program runs virtually across Maryland this year.

Art, along with the entry form must be received by Edith Deng (edithdeng@gmail.com) on or before November 30th, 2020.

3. Calling All Wayside Chefs and Bakers, Big and Small!

We are collecting recipes to create a cookbook of Wayside’s favorite dishes. If you would like to be included in this special project, email the following information to programs@waysidepta.org by October 16, 2020:

Name of dish
Name of contributing student or family
Country of origin
Number of servings
Ingredients
Steps
Special notes/story
Photo (png or jpg file) of your child or family creating the dish or posing with final product or have your child draw a picture of the dish to accompany the recipe if you would like

We can’t wait to see what our Wayside community is eating!

4. MCPS Calendar Changes in November

The MCPS school calendar has been updated for November. There will be no school on November 4 (professional day). November 10-11 will be full days of school, and November 23-24 will be early release days. See the updated calendar here.

5. A Message from Wayside’s Special Education Liaison

Virtual learning poses many challenges for students, teachers and caregivers alike. However, students with special educational needs face unique challenges. Wayside’s Special Education Liaison provides some resources below for caregivers who are navigating virtual learning for kids with special education needs.

MCPS Autism Spectrum Disorder Services unit has a series of webinars to assist parents and guardians supporting students during distance learning.
Partnership for Extraordinary Minds has many resources and events which provide guidance on special education needs, including webinars on optimizing distance learning.
Understood provides resources for parents and teachers facing the challenges of distance learning. Included are resources for virtual IEP accommodations and helping students with focus problems learn at home.
Saddleback Educational has a series of webinars on a myriad of topics, including “Bilingualism and Disabilities” and “Low tech, No-Tech, No Problem: Creative Approaches to Remote Learning for English Learners with Limited Technology.” These webinars are available on replay at Saddleback’s YouTube page.

7. Save the Date: Wayside Book Fair Online November 6-19

We are excited to see that we can still have our book fair, which is hugely popular at our school with children of all ages. So please SAVE THE DATE: November 6-19. We look forward to sharing the joy of reading with the Wayside community! We will soon share some of the events planned for this year’s fair.

8. Herbert Hoover Theatre Spring Musical

Herbert Hoover Theatre is excited to announce the Spring Musical! (Watch the video to find out what show it will be!!) Participation is open to Kindergarten through 12th grade, with SSL opportunities for middle and high school students. A Parent & Student Interest Meeting will be held virtually on November 5. More details to be announced.
