1. Join the PTA!

Wayside PTA is ready to help our students, teachers, and staff have a great year! We are adapting some of our traditions this year, and plan to sponsor Bingo Night, Talent Show, Reflections art program, Book Fair featuring a Teacher Reading Night, IXL and BrainPop, and other activities. We are also dedicating funds for class enrichment, basic supplies, and staff appreciation. Membership is $35 for parents and $10 for teachers and staff. All memberships include a printed directory and online directory access.
Membership dues don’t cover everything that the PTA provides for the school, so we invite you to make a direct donation to the Wayside PTA. Any amount is welcome! The suggested donation is $100.For returning members, verify your contact information in AtoZ and pay membership dues and direct donations here: https://atozconnect.com/

This link provides directions for returning families.

For new members, and for anyone without an AtoZ account, follow these directions.

Questions? Contact Winnie Lee, membership chair, at wini298@yahoo.com.

2. Volunteer with the Wayside PTA

While this year will look different, there are still meaningful ways you can get involved. Volunteering is a great way to help give our kids the traditions they look forward to in new and creative ways.  Want to get involved? A few areas where we are currently looking for help include:

  • AmazonSmile + Supermarkets Fundraising
  • Spirit Nights
  • Talent Show
  • Bingo Night
  • Recipe Book
  • Wellness Committee

If you are interested in helping with one of these, please contact Kirsten Carr at volunteers@waysidepta.org. Don’t know the best way to get involved? No problem! Please feel free to email volunteers@waysidepta.org if you have questions or want to learn more. With your help, we look forward to having some fun this year!

3. Message from Mrs Rhoads, Media Specialist

Hello Wayside families! I am excited to start a new school year with your children, my 7th year at Wayside! I know this year is very different compared to the start of most school years in many ways. However, I plan to continue to grow the media center program virtually and support our staff, students, and you! Here are a few key resources that I have created that I think will be helpful to you and your family. These resources will be reviewed with students extensively in their media center special, where students will learn how to access and use them.

  • List of Wayside Databases and Resources with Usernames and Passwords: The document linked here  lists all of our databases we have that have been purchased by MCPS, Wayside, and the Wayside PTA (thank you PTA for providing BrainPOP, BrainPOP Jr., and IXL for our students!). Please do not share this link with anyone outside of the Wayside community, and feel free to print a copy. Also, when you put in a password and a pop-up prompts if you want to save, choose yes, for quicker access in the future. If you would like to see a visual representation of the resources, check out the Symbaloo here (bit.ly/waysidesymbaloo).
  • Wayside’s Virtual Media Center Website: I have created a new website for students for this school year. Students can access our resources, password sheet, ebooks, virtual makerspace, digital citizenship information, contests, our media center flipgrid where they can submit videos for the announcements, information from the Montgomery County Public Library, and more. Click here to go to the site.   Due to password protection and privacy, you will need to be logged in to your child’s account to view this site.

The virtual media center website and database list can be accessed from the Wayside ES myMCPS page, by clicking on the virtual media center icon. You can also view the morning announcements that I produce, the school counseling page, and the Wayside website there as well.

Tech Questions and Troubleshooting

Reminder: If you have not yet filled out the online digital tools consent form for your child, please do so as soon as possible. There are many tools that Wayside teachers are eager to use, but we need the ok from all of you first. Please click here to access the form. Thank you for your help!

I look forward to seeing your children soon! Please contact me, Melissa Rhoads (media specialist), if you have any questions at melissa_h_rhoads@mcpsmd.org.
