1. Contribute to the Wayside Cookbook by November 30

Share your love of cooking, family, and community by contributing to the Wayside Cookbook! We’ve gathered more than a dozen recipes from the Wayside community: chili chicken nachos, egg scallion pancakes, chicken tandoori, energy balls, caramel brownies, and more…yum! Here’s a sneak peek of one recipe. From sides to sweets and everything in-between, we love to see what dishes our community loves while learning about the cultures and families that make us who we are. Please consider contributing to this fun book that you can use in time for the holidays. This cookbook will be printable, free, and is a great way to get cooking inspiration while we’re all home with our family.
To contribute to this special project, e-mail the following information by November 30 to programs@waysidepta.org:

  1. Name of dish
  2. Name of contributing student or family and grade level
  3. Country of origin
  4. Number of servings
  5. Ingredients
  6. Steps
  7. Special notes/story
  8. Optional: Photo (png or jpg file) of your child or family creating the dish or posing with final product or have your child draw a picture of the dish to accompany the recipe

2. Reflections Entries Due November 30

For more than 50 years, National PTA has celebrated the imagination and creativity of students through the Reflections program. Reflections is a unique arts-in-education effort as it engages all students, including two age groups for elementary schools: Primary for K through grade 2, and Intermediate for grade 3 through grade 5. The 2020-2021 theme is

I Matter Because…

There are six categories for this friendly competition, and participants can enter in more than one category.

1) Dance Choreography
2) Film Production
3) Literature
4) Music Composition
5) Photography
6) Visual Art

There is also a division for the Special Artists.

Please find the rules for the six categories, the rules for the Special Artist Division, and the entry form.

This program runs virtually across Maryland this year.

3. Use AmazonSmile for your Holiday Shopping to Support Wayside PTA!

4. Looking for Talent Show Help

Wayside is full of talented students, and we are looking for a parent volunteer who can make all these stars shine bright in a virtual talent show this spring. The main task is to edit short video clips together into a full talent show video. The PTA is able to offer SSL hours to an older student for video editing. If you are up for this challenge, please contact Kirsten Carr, VP of Volunteers, for more details at volunteers@waysidepta.org.

5. Families Helping Families Grocery Card Drive

This Thanksgiving, we encourage our generous Wayside community to donate to the Families Helping Families grocery card drive sponsored by MCCPTA, MCPS, and the MCPS Educational Foundation. COVID-19 has taken a heavy toll on many in our county, and the Families Helping Families program will provide direct assistance to MCPS families in need. You can make a gift by credit card, text, or check. Donate here.

7. Scholastic Book Fair Update

The book fair wrapped up on Thursday of last week. Thank you to everyone who took the opportunity to shop online and purchase books. With 25% of all sales benefitting the school, this will help us to continue to build our resources within the school. We will be able to get Ms.Rhoads, our Media Specialist, lots of books on her wish list. These books will be delivered to the school soon, ready for when schools open again.

So again, thank you to everyone who helped to continue the success of our book fair. There  has been quite a lot of behind-the-scenes help – thank you to Ms. Rhoads, Linda Young, Edith Deng, Jennifer Nordin, Christina Superina, Yishen Sun, and Peijin Li for all your help over the past couple of weeks. Our biggest thank you also goes to our teachers who gave even more of their time and their passion to read to our friends last week. It has all been so much appreciated!

8. It Takes A Village

We are grateful to Christina Superina who organized our Spirit Night at Gregorio’s last week. Thank you also to the Wayside community who participated!
